You need to hold both truths at once. The crisis protection is real, but the leverage and liquidity constraints make an unsupported do-it-yourself replication genuinely hazardous without proper infrastructure and capital behind it.
The false diversification trap
Even institutions get diversification wrong, and the trap is subtler than it looks. Loading up on correlated contracts, several grain futures, say, feels like diversifying but adds operational complexity without meaningfully reducing portfolio variance.
