ImpediMed secures FDA clearance to expand SOZO into sarcopenia risk assessment
ImpediMed (ASX: IPD) has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) clearance to market its SOZO Digital Health Platform for sarcopenia risk assessment. Under the new indication, the SOZO system may be used to assess patients at risk of sarcopenia, a disease of low muscle mass or muscle loss.
The clearance makes SOZO the only FDA-cleared bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) solution for the clinical assessment of sarcopenia risk. It adds a new clinical indication to a device many oncology teams already use, with the capability set to arrive alongside the upcoming SOZO software release (v6.3), expected in Q2 FY27.

Why this clearance matters
The indication opens SOZO to a large and often under-served monitoring gap. Sarcopenia is frequently missed in clinical practice, in part because the reference-standard tools were never built for fast, repeatable assessment.

What is sarcopenia, and why it matters for investors
Sarcopenia is a progressive skeletal muscle disorder, defined as low muscle mass combined with reduced strength or function. In oncology, it can precede a diagnosis, result from the cancer itself, or be driven by treatment through inflammation, metabolic stress, reduced activity and poor nutrition.
The clinical stakes are considerable. Patients who lose muscle tend to tolerate chemotherapy less well, face more potential complications, and can recover more slowly. Low skeletal muscle mass is associated with worse survival in patients with breast cancer.
Critically, sarcopenia is modifiable. Resistance exercise and optimised nutrition can rebuild muscle, and because the condition grows harder to reverse over time, early detection matters. Muscle loss can also hide behind a stable weight or a normal body mass index (BMI), reinforcing the need for a tool that separates muscle from fat.
The investor takeaway is clear. A condition that is both modifiable and frequently missed builds a strong clinical case for routine screening, which in turn supports better disease management.
How SOZO assesses sarcopenia risk
SOZO uses bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS), measuring impedance across 256 frequencies (from 3 kHz to 1000 kHz) to differentiate intracellular and extracellular fluid and to estimate lean and skeletal muscle mass. Where single-frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) offers just one snapshot, the full spectrum resolves body composition with the precision a clinical decision requires.
A quick, non-invasive scan produces immediate results, making it practical for the serial monitoring that tracking muscle over time demands. This contrasts with the reference-standard imaging alternatives, which are accurate but not designed for frequent, repeated use.

Supporting evidence reinforces the case. In patients with early breast cancer, sarcopenia detected by BIS was associated with more than double the odds of chemotherapy toxicity, and researchers concluded that BIS is a high-value, radiation-free alternative to CT for sarcopenia assessment.
The workflow advantage is notable. The assessment is drawn from SOZO’s BodyComp™ muscle-mass indices, taken from the same scan oncology teams already use to monitor for lymphedema and track body composition.

What’s next for ImpediMed
The focus now turns to the commercialisation roadmap. Key next steps include:
- The sarcopenia capability is expected to launch with the SOZO software release v6.3 in Q2 FY27.
Executing on that roadmap depends on ImpediMed’s balance sheet position, which was materially strengthened by a $15.2 million capital raise structured across an institutional placement and a share purchase plan, alongside at least $5 million in annualised cost reductions targeting cash flow breakeven in FY28.
