ION Video Starts Trial That Could Open a $1M Nordic Tender

ION Video has launched the first of six proposed trials, a two-phase data centre trial with Swinburne and Priority Impact that could unlock a A$1 million minimum tender and an exclusive Nordic licence if it clears a 30% capacity and cost bar.
By Josua Ferreira -
  • ION Video has started the first of six proposed trials, with Swinburne University of Technology independently testing whether its technology delivers at least 30% more data centre capacity and 30% lower operating costs.
  • Phase 1 costs ION about A$110,000 plus GST, with preliminary results due within 3 months and the full report within 6 months.
  • A successful phase 1 triggers a Priority Impact-run Nordic tender with a minimum A$1 million payable to ION, and Telia and Fossefall have expressed interest subject to the results.
  • The winning operator gets the right to negotiate an exclusive Nordic licence of at least two years, with integration, annual licensing and enablement fees still to be agreed.
  • ION's beyond-30% performance figures are internal modelling only, and the company states there is no guarantee of phase 2, revenue or a licence.

ION Video launches two-phase data centre validation trial with Swinburne and Priority Impact

ION Video Limited (ASX: IOV) has commenced the first of six proposed trials under its video technology validation program, a data centre validation trial announced on 28 October 2026. The program was recently announced to ASX in an announcement dated 16 September 2026.

The trial pairs independent testing by Swinburne University of Technology with a strategic partnership with Swedish investment firm Priority Impact AB, which is set to commercialise the technology with Nordic data centre operators.

ION’s threshold for success is a minimum 30% increase in capacity and a 30% reduction in operating costs. ION’s own preliminary internal modelling on AWS servers indicates improvements beyond both measures, but these projections have not yet been independently validated.

The company says the structure sets out a clear pathway from independent testing to an operator-funded trial and an exclusive regional licence. Commercial terms are tied directly to the result.

Anthony Baker, Managing Director and CEO

“…ION’s path to commercialisation is here, and we look forward to exploring further opportunities in other markets, including the United States.”

Phase 1 puts ION’s claims to independent test

ION has commissioned an independent assessment by Swinburne University of Technology under a research services agreement. Founded in 1908, Swinburne is officially ranked in the top 3% of universities worldwide.

What Swinburne will do

Swinburne will design the tests, choose the comparison systems, measure the results, and control the analysis and conclusions. ION will supply documentation, system access and factual corrections only.

The comparison is against a traditional rendered workflow run under similar settings, such as the same cloud operating environment on AWS or Azure. Results from the cloud environments will then be used to report the implications of ION’s technology for larger data centre environments.

Phase 1 key terms

  • Preliminary results are expected within 3 months.
  • The full detailed report is expected within 6 months.
  • Cost to ION is approximately A$110,000 plus GST, payable over the course of the engagement, plus cloud usage costs at market rates.
  • Intellectual property rights attaching to all material created by Swinburne in connection with the services vest in ION.

Phase 2 and the path to a Nordic licence

Following successful completion of phase 1, Priority Impact will run a competitive tender among Nordic data centre operators to participate in an exclusive phase 2 trial, hosted at the selected operator’s laboratory. The minimum value of the tender will be set at A$1 million payable to ION, plus any costs associated with the trial.

Priority Impact has confirmed interest from several operators, including the Nordics largest operator, Telia, and the fastest growing, Fossefall. That interest is subject to the results of phase 1.

On completion of phase 2, the selected operator will have the right to negotiate an exclusive licence for the Nordic region for a minimum of two years, under a separate agreement with ION. The licence is expected to include an integration fee, an annual licensing fee and an enablement fee, with scope and commercial terms to be agreed separately.

Stage Key fact Why it matters to investors
Phase 1 Swinburne assessment against thresholds of 30% more capacity and 30% lower operating costs Provides the independent validation of ION’s projections, which have not yet been independently validated
Tender Priority Impact-run tender with a minimum fee of A$1 million payable to ION Phase 2 is intended to be operator-funded, subject to phase 1 success and operator willingness
Licence Right to negotiate an exclusive Nordic licence for a minimum of 2 years The licence is expected to include integration, annual licensing and enablement fees

Magnus Rosengren, CEO and Founder, Priority Impact

“…We want the Nordics to be where ION is first proven…”

Priority Impact partnership terms

The agreement has a 12 month term. Priority Impact will receive a commission equal to 20% of the before-tax tender amount accepted by ION, upon receipt of full payment by ION.

The commission may be taken at Priority Impact’s discretion as cash or, subject to prior shareholder approval under ASX listing rule 7.1, in ION fully paid ordinary shares at a price equal to the 5-day trading VWAP ending on the date ION formally accepts the successful tender.

ION retains ultimate discretion on whether to proceed with phase 2 and on the identity and engagement of the selected operator. Priority Impact is a Swedish advisory and investment firm, with Chairman of the Board and Senior Adviser Björn Rosengren having previously served as Sweden’s Minister of Industry, Energy, Employment, Communications and Public Companies. Its senior advisers include Carl Bildt, former Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sweden, and Lars-Johan Jarnheimer, Chairman of the Board of Ingka Group (IKEA), Telia Company AB and Arvid Nordquist.

Why data centres and the Nordics matter

Video adds to data centre load because each new version is usually rendered and stored as its own file. ION assembles each version from one master as it plays, so no new file is rendered. In ION’s investor presentation of 11 June 2026, an 890 MB video was represented by a 115 KB virtual file.

The announcement cites the following market context:

  • Combined 2026 capital expenditure by the five largest hyperscalers is expected to exceed US$600 billion.
  • The International Energy Agency projects data-centre electricity use will more than double by 2030, to around 945 TWh a year.
  • JLL expects more than half of Europe’s AI growth to come from the Nordics and Europe’s Tier 2 markets.

The Nordic region is described as one of the fastest-growing data centre markets in Europe. Its cool climate and abundant hydropower have drawn projects including Google’s €1 billion expansion of its Hamina data centre in Finland.

For investors, the model rests on an operator-funded trial and licence structure. There is no guarantee that the trial will proceed to phase 2, no guarantee of revenue, and no guarantee that any licence will be entered into.

What happens next for ION

The announcement sets out the following sequence:

  1. Phase 1 preliminary results: expected within 3 months, delivered by Swinburne.
  2. Phase 1 full detailed report: to be completed within 6 months.
  3. Phase 2 tender: run by Priority Impact following successful phase 1, with a minimum fee of A$1 million.
  4. Possible Nordic licence negotiation: following completion of phase 2, for a minimum of 2 years.

This is the first of six proposed trials, and ION has said it looks forward to exploring further opportunities in other markets, including the United States.
