TIP and UNSW Business School launch permanent investment research lab
Teaminvest Private Group Limited (ASX: TIP) and the UNSW Business School have co-funded and established the Investment Intelligence and Decision Lab, a permanent institutional research platform focused on investment information and decision-making. The Lab converts an existing informal and project-based research relationship between the two organisations into a dedicated platform with four UNSW academics already in place and initial research underway. The arrangement runs for an initial term of two years, with the intention to extend indefinitely based on research quality. While not expected to have a material effect on TIP’s earnings for FY27, the Lab is positioned as a long-term intellectual property and performance asset for the group.

What the Lab is researching and why it matters
The Lab’s research agenda is anchored around two questions central to long-term investing: what information genuinely separates Wealth Winners® from Capital Killers™, and how investors can make better decisions. These are not abstract academic questions — they sit at the heart of how TIP constructs its investment process and serves its members.
The Lab’s initial projects will examine:
- Measurement of firm pricing power
- The link between advertising and long-term value
- How investors respond to conflicting information
- Evidence-based decision processes
Most investment firms rely on proprietary internal frameworks without subjecting them to independent academic scrutiny. The Lab’s structure applies institutional research rigour to real investment behaviour, testing research questions against evidence drawn from how experienced investors actually evaluate information and reach conclusions.
To enable that, TIP will provide researchers with controlled, anonymised access to its investor-content archive and to more than 100 investment decision meetings per year. This gives academics a rare window into live, high-quality investment deliberation at scale.
TIP’s data asset — a rare input for academic research
Teaminvest’s community of more than 750 sophisticated investors across Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom and Europe generates a rich, real-world dataset on how experienced investors evaluate evidence and challenge assumptions. The community was founded in 2007, meaning the archive carries considerable depth. All material will be used on an anonymised basis, reflecting responsible data governance practices.
Building long-term intellectual property into TIP’s investment engine
TIP expects the Lab to produce investing insights that can be translated into investment returns, workshops, screening approaches and proprietary decision frameworks. The group has identified three strategic outcomes it anticipates the Lab will support over time: increasing the value of Teaminvest membership, supporting member acquisition and retention, and strengthening TIP’s differentiation as an investment house built around education, research and collective intelligence. The Lab is also expected to enhance TIP’s ability to continue generating fund outperformance.
These outputs are intended to compound into TIP’s broader model over time, building on a track record that already spans multiple decades and business verticals.
The Lab sits alongside other recent moves to broaden TIP’s research-led model, including the Intelligent Investor acquisition announced in May 2026, which would add 7,000 paid subscribers and $280 million in ETF funds under management to its direct-to-consumer retail offering.
| TIP Vertical | Description | Track Record |
|---|---|---|
| Education & Advice | Investment banking, consulting and advisory services to wholesale and institutional clients | 25-year market outperformance track record |
| Funds Management | Direct to consumer wholesale and institutional capital | 10+ year market outperformance track record |
| Own Balance Sheet | Strategic minority and majority investments in public and private equities | Average 3.1x MOIC in private equity |
Andrew Coleman, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, TIP
“At TIP we know that growth is not the goal — compounding is. This Lab enhances our capacity to compound what our community learns, test it with leading researchers and return better tools to members and the broader value investing community. It strengthens the network and insight advantages at the centre of our long-term strategy, and sets us up to do that in a repeatable way for decades to come.”
Three voices on what this partnership means
Three UNSW representatives commented on the announcement, each connecting the Lab’s work to a distinct dimension of the partnership’s value.
Professor Karin Sanders, Deputy Dean Research and Enterprise, UNSW Business School
“The Lab connects our very talented academics from several disciplines with real-world problems, facilitating evidence-based decision-making. It is a formula that will benefit all parties involved.”
Professor Hauke Wetzel
“We are entering a period of exceptional opportunity to improve investment decisions — both through richer insights into long-term value creation and a better understanding of how investors evaluate evidence and make judgments. The new Lab provides a dedicated platform to pursue these opportunities by deepening collaboration between TIP and UNSW researchers and translating rigorous research into practical investment insights.”
Professor Mandy Cheng highlighted the cultural alignment between the two organisations: “TIP’s philosophy of compounding knowledge and wealth, and to transfer both between generations, aligns perfectly with our belief that academic research should simultaneously advance disciplinary knowledge and make a meaningful, long-term impact on society.”
What’s next for TIP and the Lab
The Lab is live and its initial research projects are already underway. Teaminvest members will form part of the research and impact ecosystem, contributing to an environment where academic inquiry and practitioner experience inform each other directly. UNSW researchers and students gain a corresponding pathway to practitioner feedback and real-world field testing. The initial two-year arrangement is designed with an explicit intention to extend indefinitely, positioning the Lab as a durable feature of TIP’s investment infrastructure rather than a time-limited initiative.
