Sky locks in exclusive Premier League rights through to 2034
Sky New Zealand has secured a six-year extension of its Premier League partnership, keeping the competition exclusively available on Sky in New Zealand until the end of the 2033/34 season. The agreement was announced on 28 August 2026.
Notably, the extension was secured with two seasons still remaining on Sky’s current agreement. Locking in the renewal well ahead of expiry signals partnership strength and removes uncertainty over a flagship content asset.

Why securing the deal early matters
Sports rights sit at the centre of a subscription media business, and negotiating a marquee league extension two seasons before the current one expires carries clear strategic value. It delivers content certainty, strengthens competitive positioning, and supports long-term customer retention.
The early renewal offers several strategic advantages:
-
Retains exclusive access to a top-tier global sports property
-
Removes competitive tender risk from rival broadcasters and streamers
-
Provides long-term visibility on a key content pillar to 2034
-
Reinforces Sky’s positioning as New Zealand’s premier sports destination
For investors, the significance lies in retention. Premium sports rights anchor subscription stability, and a long runway on a marquee league gives Sky a durable content foundation well into the next decade.
The Premier League deal is not the only long-duration rights commitment Sky has pursued recently; the company also secured NRL broadcast rights through 2034, a seven-year exclusive covering NRL, NRLW, State of Origin, and all One NZ Warriors matches, pending shareholder approval.
Sophie Moloney, Sky Chief Executive
“Securing this extension speaks to the strength of the partnership Sky has built with the Premier League, and our focus on securing the content that matters most to our customers.”
What the Premier League brings to Sky’s offering
The Premier League is described as one of the world’s most-watched football leagues, and its scale as a broadcast asset is considerable. Each season features 20 clubs competing across 380 matches, delivered through a season-long live schedule, comprehensive highlights packages, and marquee rivalries.
For a pay-TV and streaming business, exclusive premium sports content is central to the model. Live rights that cannot be watched elsewhere drive new subscriptions and reduce churn, the rate at which customers cancel. That combination of consistent premium inventory and exclusivity is what makes a league of this scale valuable to a media company’s investment case.

A trusted long-term partnership

Paul Molnar, Premier League Chief Media Officer
“New Zealand is important for the Premier League, with so many passionate and engaged fans of our competition. This long-term agreement reflects the strength of that fanbase and our relationship with Sky.”
Both parties have committed to continuing to deliver Premier League content to New Zealand fans through to 2034.
