Synertec lands its largest-ever Powerhouse order in ~A$6M Santos Moomba contract
Synertec Corporation Limited (ASX: SOP) has been awarded a contract by Santos Limited for the Moomba Central Optimisation Project (MCOP), covering the manufacture and supply of a Powerhouse Energy System at Santos’ flagship Moomba precinct in the Cooper Basin, South Australia.
The award followed a competitive Request for Tender (RFT) process. The project carries a value of approximately A$6 million, will deliver 12MW / 12MWh of total battery energy capacity, and is scheduled for delivery in H1 FY28.
The company describes it as the largest single Powerhouse order to date, and one that further expands an existing relationship with one of Australia’s leading energy companies.

Inside the contract: what Santos has ordered
The contract covers the manufacture, supply, commissioning and associated project services for the Powerhouse Energy System. Synertec will deliver two Powerhouse units, each rated at 6MW / 6MWh, connected in parallel to provide 12MW / 12MWh in total.
The scope also includes associated step-up transformers delivering 11kV, commissioning services and operational spares. The system is designed to integrate with existing generation infrastructure and support the operational objectives of the MCOP.
The two units will operate within the Moomba Power Station alongside and in coordination with five 12MW gas-fired generators. According to the company, this system is between 10x and 60x the size of previous systems provided to Santos, when compared against “large” and “small” Powerhouse systems respectively.
| Metric | Detail |
|---|---|
| Project value | ~A$6 million |
| Battery capacity | 12MW / 12MWh (2 × 6MW/6MWh units) |
| Voltage | 11kV via step-up transformers |
| Delivery timing | H1 FY28 |
| Relative scale | 10x–60x prior Santos systems; largest Powerhouse order to date |
How the contract fits Santos’ $357M MCOP programme
The contract forms part of Santos’ broader Moomba Central Optimisation Project, a $357 million (net Santos) programme announced by Santos on 9 March 2026. The programme targets more than $600 million in net capex and opex savings, with delivery planned over three years.
The MCOP is designed to replace seven ageing gas-driven compressor stations with a single remotely operated, electrically driven compression hub, supported by new infrastructure and additional power generation capacity.
Santos expects the programme to improve reliability and flood resilience, reduce operating costs and emissions, and support future production growth. For Synertec, the award embeds the company within a multi-year, well-funded programme backed by a blue-chip customer.
What is the Powerhouse platform?
Powerhouse is described by Synertec as an AI-powered, industrial-scale battery energy system that provides spinning reserve and power system stability. In this context, spinning reserve refers to backup power capacity kept available to stabilise a power system and maintain supply when demand shifts or generation fluctuates.
The platform is engineered for rapid and safe deployment, and includes a Predictive Intelligence feature intended to ensure high availability of power. The system can also integrate with various renewable energy sources.
Synertec organises the platform across four strategic segments, helping investors understand the range of applications and buyers the technology is designed to serve.
| Segment | Application focus | Buyers | Market entry status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Powerhouse Remote | Renewable microgrids, high availability, remote monitoring for critical infrastructure | Energy companies (e.g. Oil & Gas) / Mining | Yes |
| Powerhouse Urban | Compact, lower-noise urban grid services; microgrid and islanding capability | State power utilities | Yes |
| Powerhouse Industry Resilience | Fast-response battery supporting hydrocarbon generation and wider grid services (FCAS, VPP, energy shifting) | Energy / Mining / Data Centres | Yes |
| Powerhouse Grid Resilience | Edge-of-grid and weak network solutions for DNSPs and remote communities | State power utilities / Remote Communities | Active – In-progress |
The investment case: scalability across large markets
For shareholders, the significance of the award lies in its repeatability. The MCOP project advances Synertec’s Powerhouse Industry Resilience segment specifically, which focuses on improving the reliability, efficiency and economics of critical industrial power systems.
The company notes the project is similar to work being evaluated through its engagement with Amplitude Energy Limited, announced on 9 July 2026, where Powerhouse was selected as the preferred technology platform for the Orbost Gas Processing Plant Power Optimisation Project.
The Powerhouse Orbost Power Optimisation project, with an indicative value of $4.5m-$5.5m, is progressing through a Front End Engineering Design study targeted for completion in H1 FY27, with Amplitude Energy evaluating both a capital sale and a Build, Own, Operate and Maintain delivery structure.
Together, Synertec states the Moomba and Orbost gas plant opportunities demonstrate the scalability and repeatability of its industrial power systems capability across critical infrastructure applications, including mining and the rapidly growing data centre sector.
Partner ecosystem sharpens the competitive edge
Synertec attributes part of its delivery capability to a strategy of building an ecosystem of leading global technology partners. Through its strategic collaboration with Hitachi Energy, announced in May 2026, the company established a framework to jointly pursue and deliver battery energy storage and microgrid projects.
That framework combines Hitachi Energy’s advanced technologies with Synertec’s Powerhouse platform and engineering-led systems integration capability. According to the company, these relationships provide access to advanced testing protocols and leading global product roadmaps, while reducing implementation risk for customers.
The Synertec Hitachi Energy BESS collaboration targets the 5MW to 30MW segment across energy, mining and data centre applications, with Hitachi Energy contributing globally deployed power conversion technology and Synertec providing the AI-powered Powerhouse platform and systems integration capability.
Michael Carroll, Managing Director
“We are pleased to have been selected by Santos for this Project, further strengthening our long-standing relationship with one of Australia’s leading energy companies. This award is a strong endorsement of both the Powerhouse technology platform and Synertec’s ability to deliver practical, flexible and reliable energy solutions for complex industrial operations. The project demonstrates how the Powerhouse Technology Platform can be applied to improve the performance, efficiency and resilience of critical power infrastructure while supporting lower operating costs and emissions.
“The project also highlights the value of the strategic technology partnerships we have established. Working closely with Hitachi Energy and other selected technology partners provides Synertec with access to leading technologies that when combined with the Powerhouse Technology Platform provides a state of the art industrial power system that is technically and commercially compelling for our customers”.
