SportsHero elevates gaming veteran Duane Mutu to VP as HeroPlay push accelerates
SportsHero (ASX: SHO) has appointed Duane Mutu as Vice President of Business Development & Gaming, a move announced on 4 September 2026 that strengthens the Company’s executive team as it builds out its HeroPlay platform.
The transition signals that gaming partnerships, content and commerce are expected to play an increasing role in the next phase of HeroPlay’s development. It marks Mutu’s step from advisor into a hands-on executive role.
SportsHero is an integrated digital gaming and e-Sports business focused on the South East Asia market. The appointment follows Mutu’s advisory role as the Company’s Gaming & Product Strategy Advisor, announced in July 2026, making this a promotion rather than a first-time hire.

Two decades of global gaming credentials
Mutu brings more than 20 years of experience across gaming, esports and digital media to the role. His senior positions and industry relationships span some of the sector’s most recognised names.
-
VP of Gaming at Mondia
-
Global Head of Esports & Gaming at Dentsu Sports International
-
Founder of LetsPlay.Live, subsequently acquired by Dynasty Gaming & Media
-
Worked with major global publishers including Activision, EA, Riot, SEGA, Bandai Namco and Warner Bros
-
Worked with platforms including Twitch, Sky, TikTok and Facebook
His experience developing gaming propositions with telcos directly complements SportsHero’s established telco distribution model across SE Asia, a factor of particular relevance given the Company’s partner-channel monetisation approach.
SportsHero’s telco distribution model has expanded rapidly in 2026, with XLSMART adding a second major Indonesian channel covering 73 million users alongside the existing Indosat partnership, bringing the combined addressable base past 120 million subscribers.
Tom Lapping, CEO of SportsHero
“Duane has made a real impact since joining us as an advisor in July, and we’re delighted to have him step into the VP of Gaming role. He brings deep industry experience, an exceptional network and a strong commercial mindset, which are all highly valuable as we continue to expand the HeroPlay Gaming Universe. We’ve made great progress so far and having Duane come on board full time will help us move faster and turn more of those opportunities into partnerships and revenue sooner.”
What the VP role means for HeroPlay
In his new capacity, Mutu will take direct responsibility for advancing SportsHero’s relationships and developing commercial opportunities across the HeroPlay ecosystem. His remit covers four core areas.
-
Advancing relationships with game publishers and content providers
-
Identifying and developing new commercial opportunities across the HeroPlay ecosystem
-
Working with existing telco and distribution partners to expand gaming products and services
-
Developing additional ways to monetise the Company’s growing user base
According to the announcement, his focus centres on “publisher and content partnerships, gaming commerce and the continued build out of the HeroPlay Gaming Universe.”
Gaming commerce has become a material pillar of the HeroPlay build-out, with the Razer supply deal adding over 1,000 digital products including top-ups and platform e-pins to the platform and positioning SportsHero in the US$22 billion vouchers and gift cards segment.
Understanding the HeroPlay strategy
HeroPlay is SportsHero’s integrated gaming, content and commerce platform. The concept brings gaming products, publisher content and payment or voucher commerce together within a single ecosystem, aimed at the South East Asian market.
The regional opportunity is substantial but complex. As Mutu frames it, the gaming market is “enormous” yet remains “fragmented across content, platforms, payments and distribution.” The commercial thesis rests on bringing these elements together.
For investors, the addition of executive-level gaming leadership represents a step toward converting a fragmented market opportunity into monetisable partnerships, though the announcement does not attach specific timelines or targets to this ambition.
Duane Mutu, VP of Business Development & Gaming
“Having worked closely with Tom and the SportsHero team over the past couple of months, I’m genuinely excited about what we can build with HeroPlay. The gaming market is enormous, but it remains fragmented across content, platforms, payments and distribution. We have the opportunity to bring it all together in a way that creates real value for gamers and for our partners. We’ve got some great things underway, and I’m looking forward to building on that momentum, working with our partners and helping to grow HeroPlay across SE Asia and beyond.”
Performance incentives tied to revenue and publisher milestones
Mutu’s existing incentive package, first outlined in the 9 July 2026 advisory consulting agreement, carries across to the VP role. This structure aligns his reward with defined Company performance outcomes.
The incentives take the form of fully paid ordinary shares, issued only upon achievement of the milestones set out below. This is a share-based incentive rather than a cash payment.
| Performance Hurdle | Entitlement |
|---|---|
| Achieving $2.5 million revenue in any 6-month period | 1,000,000 fully paid ordinary shares |
| Achieving EBIT of $1.0 million in any 6-month period | 1,000,000 fully paid ordinary shares |
| Achieving $7.5 million revenue in any 6-month period | 2,500,000 fully paid ordinary shares |
| Securing Tier 1 Game Publisher partnerships (up to 5) | 500,000 fully paid ordinary shares per publisher, up to a maximum of 2,500,000 shares |
| Executing a binding supply or reseller agreement enabling at least 3 Premium Brand Digital Vouchers | 1,000,000 fully paid ordinary shares |
Under the terms, a “Tier 1 Game Publisher” is defined as one that satisfies at least one of the following criteria:
-
Generated global annual gaming revenue of no less than USD 100 million in its most recently completed financial year
-
Is listed on a recognised stock exchange with a market capitalisation exceeding USD 500 million
-
Has at least one title ranked in the global Top 50 grossing mobile games in the preceding 12 months
-
Is otherwise resolved by the Board to be of equivalent strategic or commercial significance to the Company’s South East Asian market strategy
The investment case
The appointment brings together an experienced gaming executive with a proven publisher and telco network, incentivised through performance-linked equity, and focused on monetising HeroPlay across SE Asia.
The structure aligns leadership, incentives and strategy around a single objective. Reward is tied directly to revenue, EBIT and publisher-partnership milestones.
For SportsHero, the near-term focus remains on expanding publisher and content partnerships, developing gaming commerce, and the continued build out of the HeroPlay Gaming Universe.
