Retail sales growth continues for a fourth straight quarter
Retail sales growth momentum continued in Q1, driven by transaction growth in Dan Murphy’s. Management stated the Retail business has now achieved four consecutive quarters of sales growth, normalised for the timing of Easter, which fell in Q3 in F26 compared to Q4 in F25.
The sales trajectory follows the F26 full year results, where Retail growth reached 2.2% in Q4 and the first seven weeks of F27 delivered 4.6%, though earnings were pressured by a lower EBIT and a cut dividend.
Dan Murphy’s drives the result
Dan Murphy’s added 3 net new stores and BWS added 2 net new stores during the quarter. Retail continued to outpace the overall liquor market.
Jayne Hrdlicka, Managing Director and CEO
“In a challenging macro-economic environment, our Retail business continued to outpace the overall liquor market, delivering 3.0 per cent sales growth in Q1, reflecting a very strong July and more moderate consumer spending since…”
Promotions and tougher comparables
Promotional intensity remains elevated, particularly in the online channel. At the end of Q1, Retail began cycling higher sales in the prior year, following the introduction of lower shelf prices and an uplift in industry-wide promotional activity.
What drove Hotels performance in Q1 F27
Food and beverage sales were supported by a record 38% scan rate for members of the pub+ loyalty program. Gaming activity moderated, reflecting overall market trends, and gaming revenue in Q1 F27 was flat compared to Q1 F26.
Ms Hrdlicka said sales growth in Hotels moderated in Q1 as growing cost of living pressure, including higher fuel prices, impacted discretionary spending. Hotel refurbishments and renewals are progressing to plan, with 34 expected to be completed by the end of H1.
The refurbishment programme sits alongside the wider portfolio reset flagged in August, which included write-downs tied to 25 hotels, 75 retail stores and the winery assets, and Hotels was the standout segment in F26 with sales up 4.2%.
Management said it continues to execute against its Hotels strategy, with initiatives designed to simplify the operating model and improve the Hotel network to competitively upgrade venues and enhance guests’ experience.
How loyalty programs support pub earnings
A scan rate is the share of transactions in which a member’s loyalty card is scanned. A higher rate means a larger portion of venue spending can be linked to identifiable members.
For a pub operator, that linkage can support:
- Better customer data on what members buy
- Visibility of repeat visits
- More targeted offers
The record 38% scan rate for pub+ members sits alongside the Hotels strategy of simplifying the operating model and upgrading the network.
Outlook and what happens next
Two items in the update carry forward-looking timing:
- End of H1: 34 hotel refurbishments and renewals are expected to be completed.
- Approaching the end-of-year holiday season: management said clear plans are in place across the Group on range, value-driven offers and quality of service.
Management expects customers to continue to manage their spending carefully and prioritise value for money in their purchasing behaviour.
Ms Hrdlicka said the aim is to ensure Endeavour is “the destination of choice for both retail liquor and hospitality.”
